Health Benefits of Strawberries

Strawberries contain vitamin C, manganese, flavonoids, folate and other beneficial antioxidants.

Just one serving, about eight strawberries, provides more vitamin C than an orange.

Having them cut up and ready to eat is a great way to set yourself up for success.

Having different colored fruits and vegetables can also help you remember to eat the Rainbow!

Health Benefits of Lions Mane

Research suggests that Lions Mane may offer a range of health benefits, including reduced inflammation and improved cognitive and heart health.

In a 2015 study, mice that consumed lion’s mane mushroom extract displayed fewer depressive behaviors and had blood markers that indicated lower depression. The researchers suggest that this is due to the extract’s anti-inflammatory effects.

Other researchers have concluded that the Lions Mane may have the potential to treat or prevent diseases that cause a decline in cognitive health, such as Parkinson’s and Alzheimer’s disease.

Medical Cannabis at Wishing Wellness

Cannabis has been used medicinally for thousands of years and recently there been a resurgence in the exploration and research into the medical benefits of this powerful herb.

CBD is the most studied non-psychoactive cannabinoid. It has been shown to have numerous benefits for conditions including seizure, anxiety, chronic pain, skin conditions and even insomnia.

Pharmaceutical grade CBD is available to treat certain forms of inherited epilepsy as well as children with autism have also seen tremendous improvements in their symptoms.

As we learn more about the safety and efficacy of cannabis it is important to have a physician who is knowledgable about the use of cannabis to treat medical conditions and help navigate forms of administration, dose and timing of the products etc.

There are drug interactions that affect the use of all medications including CBD so we are here to make sure you have the right support when navigating the use, administration and dosing in the safest, most effective way possible.

At Wishing Wellness we are committed to helping normalize the use of medical cannabis and make sure you are getting the safest and most effective medicinal use out of your prescription.

Yoga and Qigong at Wishing Wellness

Dr. Scott teaches monthly Qigong classes and Ren teaches monthly Yoga classes. These are included free to all of our Wishing Wellness Members.

Qigong movements can help improve joint flexibility, muscle strength, and range of motion. With its meditative elements and focus on deep, diaphragmatic breathing, qigong is also an effective way to manage tension and anxiety.

Historically, yoga and qigong have different movements and postures and focus, but they both similarly use the breath to move energy and invoke a meditative state.

Yoga and qigong can also be used together to bring a more heightened awareness.

Dr Scott’s next online Qigong class is tomorrow: March 27th at 9:30am pst- Open to all Wishing Wellness clients- Please reach out for the link.

Wishing Wellness Facial Routine: Gua sha

Gua sha aims to move energy, known as qi or chi, around the body.

Facial Gua sha relaxes tension in facial muscles which is purported to reduce fine lines. In theory stimulating the facial skin and muscles using gua sha can tone skin and promote increased skin elasticity.

Our face is often overlooked, even during a massage. We often hold a lot of tension in our forehead and jaw line. Massaging these areas with a well designed (ancient) tool helps bring focus and energy to your face and it only takes a few minutes to put on a facial oil and massaging.

This is a great after shower or pre-bed routine.

There are a lot of great ‘how to’ videos online but nothing beats listening to your own body and bringing focus to the nooks and crannies of your face and neck that need extra love.

Wishing Wellness Bone Broth Soup

Bone broth has been around for centuries and we both grew up in households where a simmering pot of broth was a typical part or our childhood.

Bone broth is considered a superfood by some for its minerals and proteins drawn out of bones that form collagen- a jelly-like consistency.

We try and drink at least 1 cup of bone broth daily during the winter. Sometimes 'straight up' in a mug or we dress it up and eat it as a lunch or dinner.

Pictured here is Bone Broth with Swiss chard from the garden, egg noodles and soft boiled egg- also with added green beans and some homemade Kimchi.

We make a weekly batch of bone broth and keep it in a large pitcher in the fridge.

Eucalyptus and White Sage Smudge Sticks

Eucalyptus and White Sage Smudge Sticks

Eucalyptus is commonly used in smudging to promote protection, health and energizing. It may aid in removing feeling of exhaustion and mental sluggishness due to it being considered a stimulant and potential to strengthen concentration and stimulate blood flow.

Sage is used to clear out negative energy from both objects and surroundings. It is one of the oldest and most well-known herbs for energy cleansing. Besides removing negative energy, using sage to cleanse a home helps to neutralize the energy of the space.

The use of sage to cleanse a home is deeply rooted in Native American history. It has been traditionally used to promote healing, cleanse energy as well as to remove negative energy and in ritual ceremonies. Today, Native Americans use sage cleansing ceremonies for those who are seeking balance and pure thoughts.

Reasons why walking is a great way to exercise

Walking is the most popular type of exercise in adults. It is free, does not require special training, and can be done almost anywhere. Even short, but regular, walks have substantial health benefits.

Cardio or aerobic exercise push your muscles, heart and lungs to work hard.

Studies have shown that regular cardio exercise may improve your mood, lower stress, give you more energy and sharpen your mental focus and memory. It can also help you keep off extra weight, improve your cholesterol, build stronger bones and muscles, and lower your risk of diabetes, stroke and certain cancers. It can also help you sleep better.

Reasons why walking is a great way to exercise:

* All you need is a good pair of shoes.

* You can do it anytime, anywhere.

* It's low impact and gentle on your body.

* Walking in nature is especially good for your mental health. Studies show it boosts your mood and creativity and can even be a form of meditation.

Yoga Mind/ Body

This flying seated lotus used to be really hard for me.

Getting into the pose was not the hard part - it was the mind part.

Because my legs are 'bound' if I fall/lose my balance- I most likely would have to use my hands/knees to break my fall and this terrified me.

Practicing this pose regularly and working on the 'mind' part of yoga has helped me become comfortable with flying lotus and even enjoy it.

Warmly, Ren

Dr. Scott and Ren on Acro Yoga

Acro Yoga is a fun style of partner yoga that we've been practicing for over 8 years. We started off by researching online and practicing basic poses. Once we felt more comfortable we started attending acro yoga classes, workshops and our favorite ACRO JAMS. Acro Jams are fun gathering with other acro yogis where you can learn/practice with others. We've done these at studios in Vegas and California as well as Venice Beach in CA.

Some thoughts if you are new to acro yoga...

Remember to be patient with yourself, it takes practice and PATIENCE.

Try every pose or transition a few times and if you're just not feeling it that day... move on. Once you become good at a pose or transition, keep doing it! It will give you confidence and your body will feel that muscle memory of when the balance and pose feels right.

Take pictures and video so you can look back and see if you need to make adjustments.

Maybe you have a partner or you're practicing with different partners... there is so much to learn from practicing with different partners as well as having a consistent partner.

Maintain an attitude of curiosity, work together and have fun. Keep it light and high-spirited and remember, if you're having fun, you're doing it right!

When you are first starting out its a good idea to work in an open space, move anything that you could hurt yourself on and have someone to spot you.

This pose we are doing is called a flying bow pose, starting with ‘front bird’ or ‘superman’:

Base: Place feet parallel on flyer's hip bones. Hands connected in reverse hand to hand and arms extended. Inhale in unison and on the exhale flyer leans forward with an engaged core and straight, as base acquires their weight with bent knees and elbows. Engage core and extend arms to straight and legs to 90, stacking ankles over knees, over hips. When balanced and stable, release hands.

Flyer: From front bird, keep core engaged. Lift chest and slowly reach back for one foot/ankle at a time. Reach for the outside ankles or for more stretch and opening across the front shoulders reach for the inside ankles. Push feet back into hands, look up, chin up and smile.

Base can extend or relax ankles and toes to adjust the forward/backward tilt of flyer.
