Dr. Scott Jacobson on Getting to the Root Cause

Functional medicine is all about getting your body back into balance. This involves understanding how the illness came about and what imbalances are causing the symptoms.

Functional Medicine a great fit for anyone dealing with complex, chronic disease.

At Wishing Wellness we are patient-centered:

promoting overall health as positive, ongoing wellness. Optimal health is not just the absence of disease.

We use an integrative, science-based healthcare approach:

Dr. Scott Jacobson considers the complex interactions in a patient’s history, physiology, and lifestyle that can lead to illness. The unique genetic makeup of each patient is considered, along with both internal (mind, body and spirit) and external (physical, social and environmental) factors that affect the whole person.

Dr. Scott Jacobson is an MD as well as certified Functional Medicine Practitioner thought IFM.

Functional medicine integrates traditional Western medicine with complementary medicine, creating a focus on balance and prevention. Nutrition, diet and exercise; use of the latest laboratory testing, supplements, therapeutic diets, detoxification programs and stress-management techniques are all tools in our functional medicine approach.

Wishing Wellness Qigong Training 108 Days!

We Did It!

Iron Body 108 Day Qigong Training!

Feeling stronger physically and mentally, this training has provided us with consistency and strength.

Taking time each day to make training a priority was at times not easy. We typically trained in the morning, although preferred the afternoon and at times did it past our bed time.

Meditating daily for 108 days has been transformative and continuing to study both Qigong and Meditation during this time reinforced how necessary metal clarity is, especially on the days that one feels less inclined.

What is Functional Medicine

Functional medicine addresses the root cause of disease in order to restore and maintain health.

This individualized approach to health recognizes that everyone is different and that what works for some people might not work for others.

Using the functional medicine approach, extensive testing is done to analyze your genetics, microbiome, micronutrients, hormones and take an in depth personal history and creating a health plan for you and your body.

Longevity from a doctors perspective

Dr. Shigeaki Hinohara was a Japanese physician who gained much insight into his favorite question; what makes people live longer? He clearly practiced what he preached — he worked as a doctor until a few months before his death, at 105 years old.

His wisdom for longer life include some fairly intuitive points, and some not-so obvious ones.

https://medium.com/mind-cafe/a-105-year-old-japanese-doctors-guide-to-living-longer-1c713f07096c

Functional Medicine is a great approach to anyone who is looking to check in on their body’s biodiversity and apply preventative measure to ensure health as we age.

Dr Scott on Getting a good nights sleep

Sleep Hygiene ideas.

Go to bed at the same time every night

Our bodies crave routine and the more consistent you are with your ‘bedtime’ and ‘wake time’ the more complete your sleep will be

Avoid Caffeine at least 6 hours before bed

Some people are very slow caffeine metabolizers, which means the effects of caffeine can last all day, for some people avoiding caffeine all together is a must

Go to bed as close to sunset as possible and wake up as close to sunrise as possible

We evolved to sleep when it is dark out, so our physiology is optimal when we follow the patterns of the sun

Using Amber glasses in the evening can also help

Avoid screen time 1-2 hours before bed

The light from smart phones, computers and television signal our brain to suppress Melatonin production tricking our bodies into thinking we should be awake making it more difficult to sleep

Use blackout curtains or mask to prevent sunlight from waking you up

Try reading, taking a bath or meditation before bed instead of staring at a screen

Charge your phone in another room

turn off Wifi at night as electromagnetic signals have an effect on your brain, it is subtle for most people but can make a difference in people with insomnia

Take a bath

Filling a bathtub with warm water and adding a ½ cup of epsom salt and ¼ cup of baking soda as well as a few drops of lavender or other essential oil can really help with detoxification and relaxation, making a restful sleep more likely

Mindfulness practice

Taking even a few minutes to focus on your breathing or your other favorite mindfulness technique like yoga or Qigong can increase your parasympathetic activity and reduce cortisol levels, ideal for a more restful sleep

Dr. Scott on Cannabis: Smoking, Vaping or Edibles?

What are the best methods of administration? Smoking? Vaping? Edibles? As a doctor, I am always hesitant to recommend smoking, so if there are other options that work for you, that is preferred. The long term effects of smoking cannabis are not fully known but there is some level of risk to the lungs if you are smoking.

Low temperature vaping is a good option. This is a method that involves heating either concentrates or whole dried flower just enough to release the cannabinoids but not produce the harmful combustion products found in smoke. Vaping has generated some controversy due to severe lung damage that can develop. However, recently it has been shown that the vapes that caused lung damage were black market vape pens that used a Vitamin E oil base instead of pure distillates, like those found in dispensaries. Generally vaping is considered safe and a good option for dispensing low doses of cannabinoids.

Edibles are a great way to consume especially if you are medicating for insomnia and/or chronic pain. The high that is produced from edibles is different because the THC is metabolized by the liver and converted into 11-hydroxy-THC. This slightly different form is more potent and longer acting. Taking cannabis orally also takes much longer to feel the effect, which can lead to the classic ER visits with chief complaints of eating too many edibles. It is best to be cautious when starting out on edibles, avoid taking that second dose before the first one has kicked in and in some cases it can take up to 2 hours.

Covid- 19 Health and Wellness

We continue to ask that any of our patients who are experiencing any symptoms of fever, coughing, shortness of breath, sudden loss of smell or diarrhea CALL or TEXT us right away.

We are seeing patients at the office when a physical exam is required. The VAST majority of appointments we've been able to schedule as video or phone calls this keep you and us safe.

Even before this pandemic we cleaned our office & equipment between each patient.

Other things we are doing to stay safe: Wearing a mask, wiping down doors and door knobs, using hand sanitizers, washing our hands, cleaning our phones and computers several times a day and scheduling additional time between patients so that there is no overlap of clients in our waiting room.

We have a car kit with disinfectant wipes and hand sanitizer as well as a by our front door.

Dr. Scott Jacobson's Recommended Supplements

Most people get the vitamins & minerals they need from the food they eat.

"Many of my patients supplement their diet with vitamins in order to help balance their needs. For example, calcium and vitamin D are important for keeping bones strong and reducing bone loss; folic acid decreases the risk of certain birth defects; and omega-3 fatty acids from fish oils might help some people with heart disease."

As a primary care & Functional Medicine MD- Dr Scott helps patients find out what supplements they need and don’t need.

We have recommendations on our website for the brands that we trust. You don't have to be a patient to access Dr. Scott's vetted and trusted supplement recommendations.

Wishing Wellness Garden

“If you have a garden and a library, you have everything you need. ” Marcus Tullius Cicero

Both of us come from gardening families. We like growing our own food for health reasons. It’s exercise that keeps us active doing something we love and it’s organic food, packed with nutrients, locally grown and not commercially prepared.

Most of our knowledge of growing in the desert is from trial and error and advice from a few seasoned friends. We grow twice a year, Spring and Fall. We start our seeds weeks before planting season and then plant outdoors as soon as we can. We water, weed, remove debris and wait.

Then when the garden starts producing we cook and jar and dry non- stop until it gets too hot (spring garden) or too cold (fall garden). In the Summer and Winter we clear plants, till the soil, mix compost, clear the debris.

Wishing Wellness Direct Primary Care

If you’ve had your eye on our primary care services NOW is the time to lock us in because our Primary care program is almost FULL.

We pride ourselves in keeping our practice small so that we can continue to offer individualized care to all of our clients.

That means we limit the amount of new clients we take.

We have a waitlist that allows potential new clients to sign up for FREE mindfulness classes while they wait for their first appointment with Dr. Scott.

Don’t wait until you or your loved ones are injured or sick- Please note our same day next day appointments are ONLY for currently enrolled clients.

For around $5 a day you have access to an MD who cares and is able to attend to health and wellness issues, as they arise.

At Wishing Wellness we work on prevention as well. Allow us to be your accountability for creating the healthiest you, you can be.

We are still taking NEW FUNCTIONAL MEDICINE CLIENTS who are guaranteed a spot in our Primary Care Program once their 6 month program is up.

Questions I get as a Doctor specializing in Cannabis- Dr. Scott Jacobson MD

What conditions can I use Cannabis for?

Cannabis is used to treat many medical conditions. Every state has different laws and qualifying conditions to qualify you for a medical marijuana card. Chronic pain is the most common but PTSD, Nausea, AIDS, Cancer, glaucoma and seizures have also been shown to benefit from treatment with cannabis. Nevada has recently expanded conditions to include Autism and anxiety.

What’s the difference between THC and CBD?

Cannabis, better known as Marijuana or hemp, is all the same plant. Some strains of the plant are low in THC, the psychoactive component of cannabis. When the THC is <0.3% it is considered hemp, and is generally high in CBD. Both have numerous medicinal properties. You can get pain relief from both THC and CBD and the effects are compounded when taken together, this is called the entourage effect. CBD has been studied and recently shown tremendous results for seizures in children. When it comes to anxiety I prefer CBD or a combination. For many conditions it is beneficial to combine both THC and CBD and individualizing the dosing is often what I work on with my patients.
