We all want our immune system to be as strong as possible. Dr. Scott works with patients to help create actionable steps to implement immune supportive strategies that work for you.

Here at Wishing Wellness we are huge advocates of eating a healthy diet. Processed foods, preservatives, refined sugar, gluten and dairy are hard on the body as they increase inflammation. Eliminating those foods and incorporating high quality vegetables, fruits, healthy proteins and fats is the best thing you can do for your body. Also eating fermented foods like kimchi or sauerkraut support the immune system by increasing helpful bacteria within the microbiome. Using fresh herbs and foods like ginger, garlic and turmeric will also help reduce inflammation thus help fight infection more effectively.

Sleep is vital for the development of your body’s immune system. Poor sleep or chronic insomnia can increase stress hormones, promote inflammation and make your body more susceptible to infection.

Exercise can help improve your sleep and fight stress, which are both important for immune function. Getting just 30 minutes of outdoor walking not only helps strength your body but it is also great to get fresh air and sunshine.

We talk a lot about self care on our Wishing Wellness social media. Self care is vital for our mental well-being which ultimately helps support our immune system. Stress is a normal part of life, and these days especially, it’s important to take active steps towards minimizing stress. Making time for things that relax you whether it is taking a walk, meditating, doing yoga, reading a book, or watching a show or movie are important for our health.

Wishing Wellness Garden: Aloe

We have several aloe vera patches in our garden which all started with one single plant we purchased at Trader Joe's over a decade ago.

We like to harvest the aloe vera gel, blend it in the food processor and freeze it in silicon mini muffin trays and then add them to our daily green smoothie.

Aloe Vera is a plant widely known for its healing properties.

Wishing Wellness Cashew Yogurt

Cashew Yogurt:

This yields about four medium size jars and can stay in the fridge for up to a week- maybe longer- we eat it daily for about a week. You will need an Instant Pot and Vitamix to make this recipe.

Cashew Yogurt Recipe:

Soak 3 cups of cashews for 2 hours
Rinse and add 2.5 cups of water
Blend in the Vitamix until smooth
Add 6 capsules of probiotics
Stir mixture
Add to mason jars loosely tighten the lid
Fill the instant pot with water to the base of lids, don’t cover lids with water
Put on yoghurt setting for 8-12 hours- we do this overnight.

The next morning you'll have yummy dairy free yogurt!

What to do with all this kale?

Kale grows really well in our garden and we typically use it for green smoothie and to feed the tortoises.

Occasionally we make kale chips. Here we used olive oil, salt and nutritional yeast to season them.

You can use an oven or dehydrator.

The biggest problem with making kale chips is that we alway eat the whole batch in one sitting 😂

Dr Scott and Ren on Acro Yoga

Acro Yoga is a fun style of partner yoga that we've been practicing for over 8 years. We started off by researching online and practicing basic poses. Once we felt more comfortable we started attending acro yoga classes, workshops and our favorite ACRO JAMS. Acro Jams are fun gathering with other acro yogis where you can learn/practice with others. We've done these at studios in Vegas and California as well as at Venice Beach in CA.

Some thoughts if you are new to acro yoga...

Remember to be patient with yourself, it takes practice and PATIENCE.

Try every pose or transition a few times and if you're just not feeling it that day... move on. Once you become good at a pose or transition, keep doing it! It will give you confidence and your body will feel that muscle memory of when the balance and pose feels right.

Take pictures and video so you can look back and see if you need to make adjustments.

Maintain an attitude of curiosity, work together and have fun. Keep it light and high-spirited and remember, if you're having fun, you're doing it right!

When you are first starting out its a good idea to work in an open space, move anything that you could hurt yourself on and have someone to spot you.

Our Swiss Chard is growing really well and we harvest 1 to two large bowls of nutrient dense green leaves daily. One of our favorite ways of ‘using it up’ is to add it to our morning smoothies.

The big mistake people make with smoothies is too much sugar, usually, because there is a lot of high glycemic fruit.

A smoothie should be mostly green leafy vegetables, kale, swiss chard, spinach, mixed organic greens or even zucchini or cauliflower. A hand full of low glycemic fruit like blueberries or raspberries are a great source of antioxidants.

Healthy fats are also essential, coconut or MCT oil, chia seeds, coconut milk or almond milk.

Collagen protein powder is also great for gut health. (optional)

Avoid large amounts of high sugar fruits like bananas and mangos.

You can also add turmeric, ginger, cocoa powder or maca for extra anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties.

Cleansing our mind and body

Burning sage is one of the oldest and purest methods of cleansing a person, group of people, or space and of getting rid of unwanted energies.

Here we participated in a cleansing ritual where we wrote ‘what we create’ and ‘what we release’ on paper and then burned it in a fire.
