Wishing Wellness On Healthy Eating

Eating healthy food is one of the best things you can do for your body. When you eat healthy food, you provide your body with the nutrients it needs to function at its best.

Whole foods like fruits, vegetables, whole grains, and lean proteins are rich in vitamins, minerals, and other essential nutrients that your body needs to stay healthy.

By choosing these foods over processed options that are often high in salt, sugar, and unhealthy fats, you may reduce your risk of chronic diseases like heart disease, diabetes, and cancer.

Dr Scott Jacobson On Colonoscopy's

Colorectal cancer is the third most common cancer in both men and women, and it is estimated that approximately 150,000 new cases will be diagnosed in the United States this year alone. However, despite the availability of effective screening tools, many individuals still delay or avoid getting screened. This is why it's important to get a colonoscopy at the age of 45.

A colonoscopy is a screening test that involves the examination of the entire colon using a flexible tube with a camera on the end. This test is an important tool for detecting colorectal cancer early when it's most treatable. In fact, a colonoscopy can detect and remove polyps (small growths in the colon that can become cancerous) before they have a chance to develop into cancer.

Preparing for your first colonoscopy may seem intimidating, but it's a straightforward process. Here's what you can expect:

  1. Pre-Procedure Preparation: Before the procedure, you will need to follow specific instructions to prepare your colon for the exam. This may include a clear liquid diet for a day or two before the procedure, and taking laxatives to clean out your colon.

  2. Procedure: During the procedure, you will be sedated, and a flexible tube will be inserted into your rectum and advanced through your colon. The doctor will examine the lining of your colon and rectum and remove any polyps found.

  3. Recovery: After the procedure, you will need to rest in a recovery area until the sedation wears off. You will not be able to drive, so you'll need someone to drive you home.

Getting a colonoscopy is an essential step in detecting and preventing colorectal cancer. So, if you're turning 45 soon, it's time to schedule your first colonoscopy. Don't be afraid to talk to your doctor about any concerns you may have about the procedure, and be sure to follow their instructions for preparing for the exam. Remember, early detection is key to successful treatment of colorectal cancer, so don't delay your screening.

Onsen Bathing For Health And Wellness

In Japan, onsen bathing is a long-standing tradition that dates back to ancient times. The country has thousands of hot springs, which were initially used for their healing properties. Over time, onsen bathing became a popular recreational activity, and today, it’s considered an essential part of Japanese culture.

If you’re planning to visit an onsen, it’s important to note that there are certain customs and etiquette to follow, such as bathing without clothing and washing thoroughly before entering the bath.
There are also for obvious reasons no photos permitted in onsen so although we visited several we just took photos (with a suit on!) at our private onsen in our room at Fufu Kyoto.

These are some of the purported health benefits of onsen:

Onsens are filled with natural hot water, rich in minerals like magnesium, calcium, and potassium that can improve circulation, relieve stress, and soothe sore muscles.

Onsen water contains minerals like sulfur and magnesium, which can help improve skin health and treat conditions like eczema and psoriasis.

They’re also believed to boost immunity and reduce pain and inflammation.

Matcha Tea: Health and Wellness

Matcha has been used as an energy and wellness boost for centuries. The green tea powder is packed with antioxidants, vitamins, and minerals and is said to benefit health by improving brain function, boosting metabolism, reducing stress, and promoting heart health, matcha is considered a superfood by many.

When we were in Japan we visited Uji, the birthplace of matcha tea. The beautiful city of Uji has a rich history of matcha cultivation that dates back over 800 years. In Uji we visited a 6th generation family farm and enjoyed tea making and tasting. Much of the world's high-quality matcha that we enjoy has been crafted with expertise passed down from generation to generation by these experts.

Uji’s unique climate and soil conditions, as well as the traditional shade-grown methods used by its skilled farmers, make Uji matcha often considered the worlds best.

The Importance Of Gut Health

Gut health is crucial for overall wellness.

Here are some quick facts about Gut Health:

A probiotic is a beneficial bacteria that helps maintain a healthy balance of the gut microbiome.

A prebiotic is a non-digestible carbohydrate that helps to feed the good bacteria in your gut.

The microbiome is the collection of microorganisms that live in the gut.

Here are four things that can contribute to poor gut health:

Junk food: Processed foods can disrupt the balance of the gut microbiome and lead to inflammation.

RX overuse: Antibiotics and other medications can wipe out beneficial bacteria.

Infections: Parasites, viruses, and other infections can disrupt the gut microbiome.

Chronic stress: Stress can increase inflammation and disrupt the balance of gut microbiome.

Taking care of your gut health is crucial for maintaining a healthy immune system and overall well-being. Incorporating probiotics and prebiotics into your diet and avoiding the above-mentioned things can help to promote gut health.

Wishing Wellness On Healthy Habits

It really is that simple. Having a healthy lifestyle starts with making choices and creating a routine.

Building a healthy morning routine can help you feel more productive, reduce stress, and set a tone for the rest of your day. Feeling like you need to check off a long to-do list in the morning can feel overwhelming and cause more stress than necessary. Counting the small victories in the morning can help you go into your day feeling accomplished.

Some steps to include in your morning routine:

1. Make your bed. Having a tidy space has been linked to many positive health benefits including sleep quality and a reduction in stress and anxiety.
2. Drink at least 8 ounces of water in the morning. We lose a lot of water while we sleep, so this helps jumpstart your hydration for the day, and gives your cells and organs better functionality.
3. Write in a gratitude journal. Take 5-10 minutes out of your morning to write and think about the things in your life that bring you joy.
4. Get moving. Finding some movement in your morning routine can boost your energy throughout the day, may encourage you to choose more healthful options, and improve your mood and focus.
5. Get a good night’s sleep. A strong morning routine starts the night before. Try to get at least 8 hours of sleep and avoid hitting snooze on your alarm in the morning.
6. Meditation. This may reduce stress, help you become more present, and make you feel more positive throughout your day.

What are other healthy habits you use?
