Functional Medicine at Wishing Wellness Medical

Functional medicine is a “holistic” approach, but uses science to go deeper to find the “root cause” of problems.

At Wishing Wellness Medical our program starts with an initial 90 min evaluation with Dr Scott Jacobson, MD.

Functional Medicine is about treating the individual patient, so a lot of the time spent in the first visit is getting to know about you, your concerns, your full medical history, your level of activity, the foods you eat, family history, etc.

Typically one to two weeks after this initial evaluation we do what we call a Nutrition Consultation.

Functional nutrition is the practice of considering every aspect of one's health, diet, and overall lifestyle when giving nutrition recommendations.

Once test results come in Dr Scott Jacobson reviews the results of the lab tests, and discuss the conditions you have as well as what may be causing them. He will go over what types of treatments, medications, supplementation are needed as well as any lifestyle changes we recommend to help maximize the treatment plan.

Our Functional Medicine Program is a 6 month program with unlimited access to Dr Scott Jacobson as well as health coaching and nutrition consulting.

#Ashwagandha is an incredibly healthy medicinal herb.

It is an adaptogen herb meaning that it can help your body manage stress.

Ashwagandha may also provide other benefits for your body and brain.

It has been shown to lower blood sugar levels, reduce cortisol, boost brain function and help fight symptoms of anxiety and depression.
Ashwagandha is one of the most important herbs in Ayurveda, a form of alternative medicine based on Indian principles of natural healing.

It has been used for over 3,000 years to relieve stress, increase energy levels and improve concentration.

Wishing Wellness Garden: Cayenne Peppers

Fruits and vegetables fall into different color categories: red, purple/blue, green, white/brown and yellow/orange and eating a variety of colors is a good measure of whole nutrition.

Red foods like tomatoes, grapefruit, and watermelon contain the carotenoid lycopene which help the body get rid of free radicals.

Cayenne and other hot chili peppers contain natural compounds called capsaicinoids. These are what give the spicy fruit its anti-inflammatory properties.

We love growing our own cayenne peppers which do well here in our zone 9.

Acro Yoga is a fun style of partner yoga that we've been practicing for about a decade.

Some thoughts if you are new to acro yoga and interested in practicing.

Remember to be patient with yourself, it takes practice and PATIENCE.

Try every pose or transition a few times and if you're just not feeling it that day... move on. Once you become good at a pose or transition, keep doing it! It will give you confidence and your body will feel that muscle memory of when the balance and pose feels right.

Take pictures and video so you can look back and see if you need to make adjustments.

Maintain an attitude of curiosity, work together and have fun. Keep it light and high-spirited and remember, if you're having fun, you're doing it right!

When you are first starting out its a good idea to work in an open space, move anything that you could hurt yourself on and have someone to spot you.

Art and Mental Health

Art therapy can be used to give us the opportunity to slow down, reduce anxiety, and help us process our feelings.

Both creating and enjoying art have been shown to be helpful. Recent studies and research have shown that visiting an art gallery or a museum can positively impact your health and well-being, like lowering anxiety and depression and boosting critical thinking skills.

We had a great time visiting the Louvre in Paris. The Louvre is the largest museum in the world and you could easily spend days exploring.

Travel for Stress Management and Mental Health

Travel is a passion of ours and a key element in our strategy to minimize and reduce stress. We work seven days a week and so taking time off to be with each other, experience new places and things and see things in a different way is important to our mental health.

Fun fact: Ren speaks French fluently so speaking, reading and even thinking in another language is a great way to maintain brain connectivity.

Wishing Wellness Mini Banana Muffins

Do you have ten minutes and a couple of ripe bananas?

Make these! You'll be glad you did! They also freeze really well!

To make you'll need:

Two ripe bananas

2 Eggs

1 Cup of Peanut Butter or Almond Butter (we use sugar free)

2 tsp Vanilla Extract

2 tbsp Honey (We use local)

1/2 tbsp Baking Powder

4 Chocolate Chips per mini bite.

Mix all the ingredients except for the chocolate chips together- use coconut oil to grease the mini tins and scoop it in. Add chocolate chips.

Bake at 400F for 8min

Eat The Rainbow

You may have heard us talk about the importance of ‘eating the rainbow’. Fruits and vegetables fall into different color categories: red, purple/blue, green, white/brown and yellow/orange and eating a variety of colors is a good measure of whole nutrition.

Red foods like tomatoes, grapefruit, and watermelon contain the carotenoid lycopene which help the body get rid of free radicals.

Orange foods like carrots, mangoes, apricots, cantaloupes, pumpkin, acorn squash, winter squash, sweet potatoes contain alpha-carotene, which can help protect against certain types of cancer.

Purple (red/blue) foods like beets, eggplant, purple grapes, prunes, cranberries, blueberries, blackberries, strawberries, red apples are good for heart health. Antioxidants known as anthocyanins in these fruits and vegetables may help protect your heart health by preventing blood clots.

Yellow foods like pineapple, oranges, tangerines, peaches, papayas, and nectarines contain beta cryptothanxin, which help your cells communicate with each other.

Green foods like spinach, collard greens, mustard greens, turnip greens, yellow corn, green peas, avocado, honeydew melon contain carotenoids, lutein, and zeaxanthin, which are believed to reduce the macular degeneration that comes with aging. Green foods like broccoli, Brussels sprouts, cabbage, bok choy, kale contain the chemicals sulforaphane and isocyanate which help ward off cancer by inhibiting carcinogens.

Each color carries its own set of unique disease fighting substances and eating a variety of colors is a great way to guarantee your body is getting a variety of minerals and nutrients it needs.
